BMMI’s presence in the Republic of Djibouti underlines its strategic intent to expand the Group’s activities outside the Middle East to other emerging markets that offer the potential for mutually beneficial strategic alliances and business partnerships.
Djibouti’s strategic location at the entrance to the Red Sea places it on the world’s busiest shipping lanes and close to the oilfields of the Arabian Gulf. With its status as a free trade zone in the Horn of Africa, it is ideally positioned to provide services as both a re-export hub for the region, and as an international transhipment and fuelling centre.
The Group’s state-of-the-art logistics facility in Djibouti Free Zone comprises a US$ 5 million warehouse covering an area of 17,500 square metres, and providing air-conditioned, chilled and frozen storage areas. The complex is supported by the latest racking, material handling and inventory control technologies, and operates in line with the highest international standards.
BMMI Djibouti is currently servicing a logistics contract for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which entails the receipt, handling and storage of c. 30,000 tonnes per annum of products, and re-delivery of processed commodities owned by USAID in Djibouti. The contract commenced in March 2007 for two years, with three one-year options to 2012.
In addition, it is servicing logistics and supply contracts for several foreign militaries based at Djibouti, and food and beverages supply contracts for two major hotels. Previous contracts include the successful completion of an 18-month third party logistics (3PL) contract to support Seven Seas’ DSCP Prime Vendor food and consumables supply contract in Djibouti.
