A little spice added to our fresh & friendly supermarket
Alosra teams up with Executive Chef Susy Massetti to spread encouragement in buying local!
When the fresh and friendly supermarket’s Think Local initiative was launched in 2011, its purpose was to highlight Bahrain’s finest local produce. This in turn gives recognition to Bahraini farmers who know the importance of sourcing locally grown fruits and vegetables.
So what are the advantages of choosing local? Well, for starters, local produce does not travel all those extra miles, unlike foreign produce. This means that the local fruits and vegetables are fresher and more nutritious. After all, produce loses its nutrients from the moment it is harvested.
Another benefit of buying local is that transportation costs are reduced, which means customers get a lower price at the checkout counter.
However, what is mostly reduced is the level of pollution. Flying in foreign produce requires many resources.
Finally, besides bettering the environment, buying local helps encourage local farming, which ultimately improves Bahrain’s agriculture and helps sustain and develop the economy.
One recent endeavour from Alosra, in partnership with Chef Susy, was recently launched to support buying local ingredients.
The Executive Chef has created nine delicious and unique recipes, which use locally grown ingredients. These recipe cards can be found across Alosra branches in Saar, Nakheel Centre, Amwaj, Riffa Views, Juffair and Durrat Al Bahrain. Try out Susy’s exquisite dishes, which include homemade sundried tomatoes, ciabatta bread, broccoli and prawn pasta and baked areesh cheese.
There’s something to impress everyone on the dinner table. The best part of the recipes is that they use local ingredients that can be purchased straight from Alosra supermarket! So, don’t waste any time: think fresh, cook local!
