“Decent work is safe work”
This year, the theme for BMMI’s Health and Safety Week, is “Promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all”. This is in line with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in contributing to the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals.
What encompasses decent work? Decent work involves access to quality jobs, dignity, equality, fair income and most importantly safety. Watch this video to learn more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZpyJwevPqc.
It is truly undeniable that ‘decent work is safe work’. Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHMS) are holistically integrated in all our operations, to manage and set the standard for establishing an incident-free workplace.
Our Integrated Management Systems (IMS) team is always on par with ensuring all activities undergo hazard analysis, by conducting regular risk assessments, training and reviews. Control measures are reviewed and tracked through regular HSE inspections, that take place on a monthly basis by area/department.
The target is to achieve 15% incident reduction and zero reportable accidents. Accidents are currently communicated in the Health & Safety Committee, where clear trends in the types of incidents are identified. Interventions are discussed and then implemented to reduce the likelihood of these accidents occurring. In addition, tool box talks on incident/accident reporting are held regularly for relevant employees, managers and supervisors on accident investigation techniques.
Beyond just legal requirements, a systematic OHS approach is essential in increasing our employee’s moral. We continuously aim to create awareness and place the health and safety of all employees at the core of our agenda. To encourage and support the improvement of working methods and the working environment is crucial in the reduction of risk of work days lost due to illness, injury or accident. Let’s work together in providing and maintaining a safe, healthy and dignified working environment for all employees and others.
