Amazing successful milestone for BMMI Djibouti!
Djibouti, a pivotal maritime hub in East Africa, has long been recognised for its expertise in handling break bulk import vessels. However, a significant milestone was recently achieved when we successfully carried out our first-ever break-bulk export operations for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This ground-breaking endeavour not only involved the utilisation of jumbo bags for export, but also entailed a series of unique challenges that were deftly overcome through meticulous planning, comprehensive training, and efficient supervision. Click below to read more about the various aspects of this historic achievement, highlighting the design and procurement of jumbo sacks, the stuffing process, uninterrupted operations, cargo fumigation, and the impeccable condition of the cargo upon arrival at its destination!
For decades, Djibouti has been renowned for its handling of break bulk import vessels. However, the recent break bulk export operations for USAID mark a significant departure from the norm. the combination of BMMI expertise and Djibouti logistics growing capabilities shows the ability to diversify maritime services and help make Djibouti a strategic position for logistics for the entire region. One of the key elements of this landmark operation was the introduction of jumbo bags. The design and procurement of these specialised sacks was crucial to ensuring the safe and efficient export of the cargo. This responsibility fell to our expertise as the prominent logistics provider, where BMMI played a pivotal role in facilitating the break bulk export operation.
The stuffing of 50-kilogram cargo into jumbo sacks posed unique challenges, particularly regarding the expertise of the dockers and the limited space available. However, through meticulous planning, comprehensive training programmes, and effective supervision, these challenges were skilfully managed. The successful execution of the stuffing process speaks to the dedication and competency of the BMMI team involved.
Despite the novelty and complexity of the operation, Djibouti's logistics team ensured uninterrupted work for seven days, 24 hours a day, surpassing the contractual commitment, delivering 1,500 metric tonnes per day. This outstanding performance reflects the resilience and dedication of the combination of BMMI expertise and Djibouti logistics industry.
Another notable aspect of this historic operation was the implementation of cargo fumigation on the vessel itself. This preventive measure was undertaken for the first time ever in Djibouti and it helped safeguard the cargo against infestation. The ultimate measure of success for any export operation lies in the condition of the cargo upon arrival at its destination. In the case of Djibouti's break bulk export, the cargo reached its destination without any signs of infestation or damage. This achievement underscores the meticulous handling and quality control measures implemented throughout the entire process.
BMMI Djibouti's recent milestone achievement of conducting break bulk export operations for USAID is a significant event in our organisation’s logistics history. This ground-breaking endeavour not only showcased BMMI’s expanding capabilities but also demonstrated its capacity to overcome challenges through meticulous planning, training, and supervision. By successfully executing this operation, BMMI and Djibouti have not only diversified logistics services but have also reinforced their position as a reliable and efficient global logistics hub.
